GRUB CONTROL

CHINCH BUG CONTROL

CHINCH BUG CONTROL

White grubs can cause significant damage to lawns, and recognizing the signs of their presence is crucial for effective control.

Here's a breakdown of common indicators:

Brown or Yellow Patches

  • These patches often appear in late summer or early fall when grubs are actively feeding on grass roots.
  • The damage can resemble drought stress, but it won't improve with watering.

Spongy Turf

  • Infested areas may feel soft and spongy when you walk on them, as the grubs have severed the root system.

Turf That Lifts Easily

  • Heavily damaged turf can be easily pulled back, like lifting a rug, because the roots have been eaten.
  • You'll likely see the white, C-shaped grubs in the soil beneath.

Increased Animal Activity

  • Birds, skunks, raccoons, and other animals may dig up your lawn in search of grubs, leaving behind disturbed soil.

Visible Grubs

  • The most definitive sign is finding the grubs themselves. They are white or yellowish, C-shaped larvae with brown heads.

When to Look:

  • Grub damage is most noticeable in late summer and early fall when the larvae are largest and feeding most aggressively.

  • Spring can also show signs of damage from grubs that overwintered.

CHINCH BUG CONTROL

CHINCH BUG CONTROL

CHINCH BUG CONTROL

Chinch bugs can be quite destructive and cause extensive lawn damage, it's important to recognize the signs of an infestation early on.

Here's a breakdown of the key signs to watch out for:

Yellowing or Browning Patches

  • This is often the most noticeable sign. The damage typically starts as small, irregular patches of yellowing grass that gradually turn brown.
  • These patches often appear in sunny, dry areas of the lawn.

Drought-Like Symptoms

  • Infested grass may appear wilted and dry, even after adequate watering. This is because chinch bugs feed on the grass's sap, disrupting its ability to absorb water.

Irregular Feeding Patterns

  • Chinch bugs tend to feed in groups, resulting in distinctive, irregular patterns of damage.

Dead Patches

  • In severe infestations, the grass will die, leaving behind large, brown, dead patches.

Identifying the Insects:

  • Chinch bugs are small insects, typically about 1/8 to 1/4 inch long. Adult chinch bugs have black bodies with white wings.
  • You may find them crawling on the surface of the soil or grass, especially in the thatch layer.

"Float Test"

  • Cut the bottom out of a coffee can or similar container.
  • Push the can a few inches into the soil in an area where you suspect chinch bug damage.
  • Fill the can with water.
  • Chinch bugs, if present, will float to the surface.

Other Indicators:

Damage in Sunny Areas

  • Chinch bugs prefer warm, sunny locations, so damage is often most apparent in these areas.

Damage During Hot, Dry Weather

  • Chinch bug populations tend to thrive during hot, dry periods.

Lack of Response to Watering

  • If your lawn shows signs of drought stress despite regular watering, chinch bugs may be the culprit.
